The Community begins the procedure to declare the Bolnuevo Gredas as a natural monument (23/06/2017)

A monolithic protection fence will be installed integrated in the landscape

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, in collaboration with the Municipality of Mazarrón, will start the process of the declaration as a natural monument of the Gredas de Bolnuevo due to its special interest in landscape, great ecological value and extraordinary geological and paleontological importance .

The director of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro, and the mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jiménez, today visited the also known as 'enchanted city of Bolnuevo' and announced the process to ensure the protection of monoliths and to value the attractiveness of these Natural formations.

Likewise, it is planned to place a palisade of natural wood that will protect them from possible human affections, as well as a general adaptation of the environment to favor their contemplation that includes the integral adaptation of the installations to the landscape.

Rosauro stressed that "the whimsical modeling exercised by the action of wind and water has been sculpting these monoliths with unique and unique forms that it is necessary to protect, preserve and value as a natural and tourist attraction."

In fact, the report being prepared for its declaration as a Natural Monument highlights "the unique geomorphological forms that represent the most representative examples of differential erosion or alveolar erosion 'in honeycomb', due to the greater or lesser wear of the relief, in Function of the different hardness of the terrain materials ".

The natural environment of the Gredas de Bolnuevo also houses an abundant collection of fossil remains, where the remains of corals and some molluscan bivalves - of special rarity, stand out.

The environmental set also collects significant geological evidence of the tectonic history of the area, which is evidenced by an upwelling of fractured dolomites or the presence of vertical fault planes.

Also, the Gredas are nestled between the extensive beach of Bolnuevo and the landscape of special appeal of the solana of the Sierra de las Moreras.

This semi-arid environment is home to an ecosystem of extraordinary singularity where forest masses predominate of scrubland such as espartal, tomillar or romeral and which serve as sustenance for species of great importance, such as the Moravian tortoise, the ocellated lizard or the predatory birds Bonelli's eagle or peregrine falcon, among other.

The protection of the Gredas de Bolnuevo will include the inclusion of this environmental set in the list of Natural Protected Areas of the Region of Murcia, with the figure of a natural monument, in application of the Law of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity.

This declaration will involve the declaration of the second natural monument of the Region of Murcia after the Mount Arabí of Yecla.
