Agriculture supports the diversification of crops in Mazarron as an alternative to tomato monoculture (13/05/2012)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has for two years work to support farmers in Mazarron, to facilitate the introduction of new crops to help diversify the monoculture of tomato that has characterized this area.

The Director General of Agro-Food Industry and Agricultural Training, Ángel García Lidón, noted that "should not focus all efforts on one product," referring to the crisis affecting the tomato crop, due to competition from third countries.

In this regard, he noted that "diversification strategy focuses primarily on extratempranas varieties of stone fruits."

Thus, the landscape of this county experienced a gradual transformation.

The plastic greenhouse tomato is giving way to new plantings of trees, with nectarine, peach and apricot, among others, covering approximately 20 hectares, on the initiative of a dozen farmers who have the technical support of the Ministry and collaboration of the local council.

The official noted that this regional initiative "will not be a direct competition with other areas of the region traditionally fruit, as the good climatic conditions favor coastal growing extratempranas varieties, while in inland areas can be produced early."

He also noted that "the varieties grown in Mazarron extratempranas will expand the schedule of the production supply, which will help farmers in the consolidation of certain markets compared to foreign competitors."

The goal is extratempranos fruit quality.

Garcia said the great work Lidón counseling and transfer carried out by the Regional Office's technical and Fuente Alamo Mazarron, which "are helping farmers to implement cultural practices necessary for optimum performance in areas such as technical pruning, plant and fertigation, among others. "

Other crops

Mazarron is a very heterogeneous region, with a diverse soil and climate.

Therefore, the Murcian Institute of Agricultural Research and Development and Food (IMIDA) develops cherry five trials in different areas of town, to see the varieties best suited to each.

The Ministry has also established contacts with public and private, so that farmers can address Mazarron in the short term, new trials with subtropical crops (mango, avocado ...) which will take place in the warmer areas of the municipality, as Cañada de Gallego.

Also considering the possibility that farmers of this county are integrated into the company News Mediterranean Varietals SL (Novamed), a company that develops actions for obtaining new varieties of stone fruit (peach, nectarine, flat), in collaboration with the IMIDA.
