The council sought public assistance to combat the presence of mosquitoes (01/08/2013)

The Department of Health of the City of Mazarrón has proceeded, since last week, to run an intensive treatment control adult mosquito populations in all urban areas of Puerto de Mazarrón.

These treatments, which will continue over the next few weeks in August, will complement the vector control scheduled tasks that take place every day and throughout the year.

This year, the lack of control in private areas, especially private pools that have not been properly treated by their owners, has led to a proliferation of this insect unusual.

As the Councillor for Health, Maria Martinez, "many people have stopped applying the treatments to their private pools by the lack of economic resources, which has caused it to have created pockets of mosquitoes in various parts of the coast ".

Therefore, the mayor has requested "the collaboration of citizens not to give up this work, which has led us to have to apply an intensive treatment that is already yielding results, since the presence of mosquitoes has dropped to normal levels."

Also, the Department of Health is carrying out an information campaign on the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) whose presence was detected last year in the municipality.

This mosquito species is well adapted to the ecological peculiarities of the Mediterranean area, colonizing new habitats and breeding in small bodies of water, natural or artificial, stagnant and closed as drums, jars, dishes pots, buckets, tires or other types of containers that remind them of their natural habitat, consisting of flooded holes in the tree trunks.

Maria Martinez makes another appeal to the public in this regard "for this species, which differs from the common mosquito is diurnal and produces multiple aches and painful bites, can be bred in a small container of our house. Important thing is to confirm that not have any object that has been stuck a small amount of water, which is what used to breed this species. "

Both in the treatment of large quantities of water that grows common mosquito, as in small quantities "citizen collaboration is critical because special treatments are more effective if we do not let the mosquito's ability to proliferate in our private properties".
