The campaign against the tiger mosquito is able to reduce by 70% the number of incidents communicated (14/08/2014)

After Barcelona, Mazarrón is the second in Spain which has among its regulations a municipal ordinance dedicated to educate citizens about prevention systems to mitigate the effects of the Asian tiger mosquito, an invasive species that affects the entire Mediterranean area.

And within that ordinance one performance system applied throughout the year and is usually reinforced in the summer season is contemplated.

The performances consist of the application of ground spraying techniques and the use of aircraft to treat localized sources such as wadi.

But the tiger mosquito takes very little to raise their larvae.

An irrigation pond or an abandoned pool or garden areas where there is a small accumulation of water are ideal places for them to proliferate their species.

Hence Lokímica technicians, company hired by the City of Mazarrón, have sharpened their wits and have decided to apply a novel detection system for possible hidden GPS foci.

A helicopter flies over residential areas and, with a margin of error of 25 centimeters, the affected points located on private property.

From there he takes part in the municipal officers and these are responsible for contacting the owners.

Manuel Fernandez, head of Health of the City of Mazarrón confirms that so far the response has been pretty good and so far has not come to punish anyone.

Fines can be up to six thousand euros.

"The most important thing is the awareness of citizens, not to leave small accumulations of water and keep chlorinated pools."

Says Ruben Bathroom, Lokímica technician who also stresses that the products used in spraying campaigns are totally harmless to flora, fauna and other course for people.

"This is a bacterial product that acts through ingestion in mosquito larvae."

Maria Martinez, Councilman Health of the City of Mazarrón confirms that "municipal complaints greatly decreased because of the work that is being done."

Martinez affects citizen collaboration.
