ANSE shows how to control erosion and desertification in semiarid (20/08/2009)

The Southeastern Association of Naturalists (ANSE) has published various publicity materials (manual, web and brochure) designed to show farmers and land managers how to control erosion and desertification.

The publications have been published in the framework of the "Model agroforestry management of private estates for the control and prevention of erosion and desertification in semiarid environments" and presents the results obtained therein.

The project has been funded by the Biodiversity Foundation, the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs and has had the scientific supervision of the CEBAS-CSIC and the participation of the Directorate General of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity and the City of Mazarrón .

The project management model of private farms and agroforestry to control erosion and prevention of desertification in semi-arid environments "funded by the Biodiversity Foundation has developed in the last year in the Biological Reserve Malcamino (Mazarrón) and nursery Barrio de la Concepción (Cartagena).

The project has permitted various soil conservation measures such as restoration and maintenance of crops in organic farming scheme, restoration of habitats of Community interest in abandoned fields, slope restoration, dismantling of greenhouses, etc.

The project has also involved the Directorate General of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity through aid to forest owners has supported the adoption of various measures to minimize the risk of forest fires such as forest track arrangement, control of motorized access to reservation or improved water supply from the well and the town of Mazarron, through the agreement it has with ANSE for the conservation of the reserve.

Ultimately, the project has been a practical application of the results of the CEBAS-CSIC in the European project Recondo.

The main novelty of the project has been the application of low impact techniques such as "Strategy for the Reduction of Connectivity", which effectively controls erosion by acting on specific areas of land previously identified.

Some of actions (construction of small earth dams, diversion of runoff from roads, construction of pedriza) are based on the application of traditional techniques, many of them obsolete, but applied at selected points on the scientific criteria support tools such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

The project results are disseminated through brochures now, manual paper, website and interactive CD are aimed at farmers and land managers and interested public, so they can apply these soil conservation techniques on their farms and holdings, since one of the objectives of the project was to establish a model that is applicable to other arid lands.
