The meeting of gerontogimnasia celebrated today in the Maritime Walk of Mazarrón has congregated to 500 elderly people coming from the 17 centers of the Murciano Institute of Social Action (IMAS).
This initiative seeks to promote the quality of life of this group through activities to promote active aging.
The program that the IMAS offers in senior centers includes workshops to promote health and well-being, personal development and life cycle and training projects, social participation and volunteering.
The Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Violante Tomás, together with the mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jiménez, inaugurated today this meeting, in which all the municipalities have participated, since the activity of gerontogimnasia is one of the workshops in the area of health with greater repercussion in the centers due to its high number of participants.
Alicia Jiménez highlighted the work carried out in the Senior Center of Puerto de Mazarrón that currently celebrates the activities included in the "May Cultural".
This center is scheduled for this year 20 workshops, which are enrolled about 200 people.
The cycles that are developed today are animation to reading, emotional health, nutrition, dressmaking, crafts, memory and writing, ballroom dancing, computer, yoga and pilates, among others.
At present it has 5,728 associates.
Violante Tomás explained that "if we take into account that physical exercise is a fundamental practice at any time of life, in the elderly, whether the person stays in a very healthy state or if he suffers some type of pathology, it is very beneficial perform a small session of geronto-gymnastics every day in which all muscle groups are worked in. Today we have verified that all the joints move, the work of the cardio-respiratory apparatus is improved and cognitive functions such as attention, memory and body schema are exercised, others ".
The regional government promotes healthy aging, which promotes personal autonomy, integration and full participation, through the activities programmed in its 17 centers, which have more than 100,000 members.
This year more than 350 workshops on gymnastics, crafts, poetry, theater, intergenerational exchanges and painting, among others, are planned in these spaces.
The Ministry will allocate some 400,000 euros this year to care for the elderly in the municipality, which has 97 beneficiaries between day care centers, telecare service and home help services.
The social center of Mazarrón has also been included in the agreement recently signed by the counselor with the banking foundation 'La Caixa' to develop the program of care for the elderly and the promotion of active aging.
Through the agreement, these centers will host some 370 activities and workshops in which more than 3,500 adults are expected to participate.
