The treatment plant of Mazarron has a current capacity of 15,000 cubic meters per day, which in 2017 involved a treatment of more than 2.5 cubic hectometres that were made available to irrigators in the area.
This plant serves a population of 38,238 inhabitants.
The general secretary of the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, María Dolores Valcárcel, accompanied by the managing director of the Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Region of Murcia (Esamur), Joaquín Ruiz, and the mayor de Mazarrón, Alicia Jiménez, visited the station where she stated that "this sewage plant reuses up to 2,650 tons of sludge from the water treatment process, which is used for agriculture, as an example of a circular economy".
During the event, they visited the land and the location where the plant expansion work will be carried out, which will consist of a fourth line that will allow a pretreatment for the sweet line and a new tertiary treatment.
The expansion works will involve an investment of more than 6.7 million euros by the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
