The Governing Board of the City of Mazarrón has approved the expansion project of the WWTP of Las Moreras for its adaptation to the current demand after the population growth experienced since its implementation in 2004. For this the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries will invest 6.7 million euros.
The action contemplates a fourth line that will allow a pretreatment for the fresh water line and a new tertiary treatment.
The treatment plant of Mazarrón has a current capacity of 15,000 cubic meters per day, which in 2017 involved a treatment of more than 2.5 cubic hectometres that were made available to irrigators in the area.
This plant serves a population of 38,238 inhabitants.
Alicia Jiménez, Mayor of Mazarrón, accompanied last August in his visit to Mazarrón to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, María Dolores Valcárcel, who confirmed the start of the procedures for carrying out works of expansion.
Jiménez said "your satisfaction to see how from the regional administration have met the demands made from the City to expand an installation that serves a growing population."
The general secretary of the Ministry of Water together with the managing director of the entity of Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment of the Region of Murcia (Esamur), Joaquín Ruiz, said at the time that "this treatment plant reuses up to 2,650 tons of sludge from the process of water treatment that is dedicated to agriculture, being an example of a circular economy. "
