The Vía Verde de Mazarrón has an average of 1,500 users per month, which is more than 31,000 users since its inauguration in August 2017, according to the eco-meter installed by the Community.
Of them, 52 percent were pedestrians and the other 48 percent cyclists.
In order to favor the greater use and functionality of this Greenway, which has 13.6 kilometers and connects with the Greenway of Campo de Cartagena in the vicinity of La Pinilla, the itinerary will be extended with a new trail of 1.3 additional kilometers that will link to the urban area of Mazarrón.
This new lane, which will open to the public next May, will start in the reception area of the Vía Verde (located west of San Cristóbal hill) and will continue to the city through a path next to the highway RM-D4 taking advantage of part of its hard shoulder and domain zone.
The objective of this new path, which involves a cost of around 120,000 euros, 80 percent co-financed with Feder funds and the other 20 percent with the Community's own funds, is to improve the safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists from the town of Mazarrón.
Currently the Region has a total of four greenways: the Northwest, the Campo de Cartagena, the Mazarrón and the Almendricos, which account for more than 150 kilometers.
The Greenways are one of the main instruments to reinforce ecological tourism and boost the areas of the interior of the Region.
The sports and leisure uses in contact with nature are considered as optimal claims to attract more tourists in the low season and contribute to the economic reactivation of these areas and the creation of employment.
