The Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, named the Virgin of Carmen yesterday as patron of Puerto de Mazarrón during a solemn Mass that took place in the church of San José in the coastal town.
The bishop signed a decree that also signed the mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, who was accompanied for the occasion of the councilors of the government team Plácida Gómez, Conchi Aparicio, Miguel Ángel Peña and Francisco José García.
In this way, the patrons of Puerto de Mazarrón are San José and the Virgen del Carmen whose festivity next Tuesday is full of acts on the occasion of this appointment.
Among them, the inauguration of a sculpture in tribute to fishermen by Mazarron artist Lola Navarro whose idea began to be forged about 8 years ago and now becomes a reality.
The events scheduled for Tuesday 16 begin at 9:30 in the morning with a Mass in the parish of San José which will be followed by the transfer of the image to the fish market where the besapie to the Virgin will take place during all morning, but not before making a stop on the way at the headquarters of the Fishermen's Association for the popular salutation to the patron saint.
At 6 o'clock in the afternoon the solemn Eucharist will take place in the fishermen's market, followed by the popular maritime procession through the Bay of Mazarrón with the image of the 'Star of the Seas'.
The boat 'Ballesta Acosta' will be the one in charge this year of carrying the virgin who, after the aforementioned procession, will return to the parish of San José, carrying out, on this occasion, a terrestrial procession.
It will be during this return when the Virgen del Carmen makes a stop to open the sculpture tribute to the fishermen at the entrance of the promenade.
