The Community of Irrigators of Mazarrón (CRM) has installed a floating photovoltaic solar plant on its desalinated water reservoir, in a first phase of action that pursues the achievement of a lowering of the water that is obtained from the desalination plant 'Virgen del Milagro'.
Specifically, the price at which it now produces desalinated water ranges around 52 cents, and, once the installation of the second phase has been completed, it will be around 32.
With the solar installation, the CRM will generate electricity of approximately 2.6 million kilowatt hours per year with which to feed the desalination plant, but in addition, some 35,000 cubic meters of water will be saved annually by preventing losses of 90 cubic meters water diaries by evaporation.
The project will be concluded with a second phase that should raise the current power (1.8 megawatts) to eight megabytes (8 MW).
The first phase was inaugurated by the president of the CMR, José Hernández, the mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, and the Minister of Water and Environment of the Region of Murcia, Antonio Luengo, who were accompanied by various authorities among which the delegate of the Government of Spain in Murcia, Francisco Jiménez, and a high number of deputies of the regional assembly and positions of the Autonomous Community.
From the start-up of the second phase and once the 8 MW have been completed, the production of electricity of solar origin will also prevent the emission of more than 5,200 tons of CO2 per year.
The one of the Community of Irrigators of Mazarrón, that estimates that it will amortize the investment in eight years, is the first desalination plant destined to the agriculture that was constructed in the Segura basin.
The president of the Community of Irrigators of Mazarrón, José Hernández, explained about this project that "the first phase is located above the reservoir and the rest, in this system that is unique and new in Spain, will install in the surrounding areas of the reservoir".
Hernandez expressed his desire for "the second phase to be completed by next summer to reach 8,000 kilowatts."
After the 8-year amortization, "the price of desalinated water will be around 25 cents, which is a great achievement since it equals the price of other waters."
The mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, stressed that "it is an innovative commitment and investment for the sustainability of the Irrigation Community and that it should serve as an example".
The first mayor highlighted the avant-garde to which this community always stands "because the desalination plant was already a pioneer in the Region of Murcia and now this project that, in addition to producing cheaper water, will mean less CO2 emission into the atmosphere with which will achieve greater protection of the environment.
