National nativity scenes of the Jorquera collection illuminate Town Halls until January 10 (16/12/2019)

The exhibition hall on the ground floor of Casas Consistoriales hosts until January 10, 2020 the exhibition 'Belenes', a collection of this Christmas tradition that the family has within the Jorquera Collection of Popular Art and which was inaugurated by the mayor from Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, and the owners of the collection, Salvador Jorquera and Antonio Jorquera.

The latter made an introduction of the belenismo in Spain explaining that "although the Franciscans began to ride nativity scenes in the fifteenth century, however it was not until the eighteenth century when the tradition extended to all homes," recalling that this practice began in the court and between the aristocracy and then settling in the lower classes of society.

Salvador Jorquera explained for his part that "in this year's show you can see several Spanish nativity scenes whose interest resides especially in the workshops that created them."

Thus we can find handmade works by the Brothers Griñan, Jesús Griñán, José Luis Mayo, Carlos Cuenca, Manuel Nicolás Almansa, María Paños or Joaquín Pérez, among many others.

In this way, the visitor can take a tour of the Spanish geography without moving from Town Halls, discovering nativity scenes from Murcia, Seville, Madrid, Albacete, Valencia, Salamanca, Segovia, the Canary Islands, Mallorca, Burgos, Badajoz, Aragón, León, Huelva Cádiz , La Coruña, Salamanca, Barcelona, Lerma de Burgos and Granada.

Mayor Gaspar Miras thanked the Jorquera family that "they have made this exhibition possible so that we can enjoy all the mazarroneros and visitors."

And he recalled that Mazarrón is a municipality with a great tradition in nativity scenes and that "thanks to the funds of Salvador Jorquera we can mount an exhibition of this type every year for these dates."

The visiting hours are in the morning from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm and in the afternoon from Thursday to Friday from 5 pm to 8 pm.

The space will be closed on December 25, 2019 and January 1 and 6, 2020 and last Saturday of the month.
