| They have been declared a Natural Monument since last year and receive numerous visits, especially during the summer months | The Community finished today, with the placement of the last sleeper, the installation work of a perimeter fence to protect the Natural Monument of Las Gredas de Bolnuevo.
The Mazarrón City Council, which received the works, will be in charge of carrying out the maintenance of the performance. The director general of the Natural Environment, Fulgencio Perona, visited the area and stated that "we must guarantee the protection of a single space." He recalled that "Bolnuevo receives thousands of tourists every year who take advantage of the occasion to contemplate the spectacular landscape created by nature, and therefore the regional government, as a result of its commitment to Mazarrón, has carried out the conditioning of the environment" . 47,500 euros have been invested in the works with the aim of improving conservation and preventing human-caused erosion in the Gredas de Bolnuevo, which have been declared a Natural Monument since March last year. With this action carried out by the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment, the aim is to prevent visitors from accessing the stone formations, by means of a one-meter-high perimeter fence based on wooden ecotravers, from which can be seen the monumental landscape without risk to stone formations or visitors. The contrast and variety of forms that alveolar erosion has produced have given it the popular name of 'Ciudad Encantada de Bolnuevo', which forms an environmental complex of special scenic interest, great ecological value and extraordinary geological and paleontological importance. The sedimentary rocks of Bolnuevo are 5 million years old and witness a unique geological event, the advance of the sea on the continent.
In addition, abundant fossil remains can be observed in the area, both of marine invertebrates, among which bivalves stand out, as well as vertebrates, such as sirenians, rare marine mammals.
