The auxiliary vessel "Las Palmas" rescues 3 people off the coast of Mazarrón (07/03/2016)

A few hours ago only, the auxiliary vessel "Las Palmas" which was preparing a training for the Force Contraminas measures Navy has rescued three men who manned sport fishing boat "Sea 2" when they were to 3 miles south of the lighthouse Mazarrón.

The ship was built in Santander in 1978 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique.

In 1982 it was acquired by the Navy, which gave him rescue operations, towing, maritime surveillance, exercises, help in disaster areas, combat marine pollution, support for the Spanish fishing fleet, etc.

As Oceanographic Research Vessel (BIO) "Las Palmas" was the first Spanish ship that participated in scientific missions in Antarctica, particularly during the years 1988 and 1991, before it went into service BIO "Hesperides".

He participated annually in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science in the Spanish Antarctic Campaign developed by the Spanish Polar Committee.

The ship has a crew of 35 people since April 2004 and is based in Cartagena (Murcia).

In this new operational phase, the ship has gone to support work on exercises and national collaborations.

The "Las Palmas" has shown great versatility to perform a lot of tasks ranging from collaborations for exercises trailer towing targets for shooting practice, funding and collection of any type of mine exercise, collecting torpedoes ... .;

to participation in national and international support vessel as divers with a unit Dive Center or Navy Unit Mine Action Divers integrated onboard exercises.
