Numerous residents of Mazarrón and other parts of the Region of Murcia gathered on Sunday in the hamlet of Las Balsicas to attend a centennial tradition that has its hermitage as a meeting point.
The celebrations in honor to the Purisima Conception began on Friday January 13 with the cry of Cristóbal Garcia.
This neighbor of Puerto de Mazarrón, with roots in the hamlet, had the honor of giving the first proclamation of some festivities that have extended agenda and have gained more force, despite its postponement in December by the rainy season.
García reviewed the history of Las Balsicas, focusing on its neighbors, those true protagonists who in the 80s rescued a tradition that, due to its particularity, crossed borders.
The mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jiménez, thanked the words of Cristóbal García and highlighted the work of the Festival Committee, especially the new peduna, Isabel Cazorla.
The Councilor of Celebrations, Patricio Sánchez, encouraged those present to enjoy some celebrations that combine tradition and fun.
Notable improvements in the fairgrounds, carried out by the Town Hall, have provided greater comfort for the development of these festivities which, due to the circumstances, have approached San Antón, the pattern of animals, with the donkey being the protagonist of a Jovial celebration that honors the anecdote happened at the time of construction of the hermitage.
According to legend, more than 200 years ago, pack animals served to transport materials that would erect the place of worship claimed by their neighbors.
All the asses ended up exhausted except one, who according to the testimonies, romped and brayed without stopping.
The young people gathered there laughed at the animal's attitude and began to imitate him.
The anecdote was remembered year after year to become a popular celebration.
The "brawler", dressed in a hat with colored ribbons "brays" the chosen person in the ear and simulates his grooming with a large comb, a horseshoe, barbs and hammer.
Good humor and understanding, always within the logical festive context, reign during a day of fun and peculiar coexistence that culminated, again, with a giant paella.
Before the celebration of a Holy Mass with Easter cante, celebrated by the parish priest of the Church of San José de Puerto de Mazarrón, Abel Rosa.
On Saturday the procession took place in honor of the Patroness.
Throughout the day there were numerous organized events: cricket competition, children's games, caliche championship, dance performances and musical performances of the Paretón crew.
A musical bingo ended the night.
