The burning of plant residues on farms generates smoke clouds that affect the population, and have harmful effects on health
Ecologistas en Acción has denounced to the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and the Environment, and also to the City of Mazarrón, the deterioration of air quality caused by the burning of vegetable waste that is produced in farms in the region.
The ecologist organization says that this type of episodes occurs between October and May, being especially intense during the spring.
Dates in which it is habitual this type of practices that provoke the formation of dense clouds of smoke that move, and end up reaching nuclei of population like Mazarrón, Port of Mazarrón and others.
Smoke clouds penetrate private homes and buildings like schools, sometimes making the air almost unbreathable.
In the case of schools, they explain, on occasion the smoke has even prevented students from going outside during recess.
From the environmental organization they explain that the smoke is a pollutant that "damages the health of the exposed population, with effects that can range from headache, eye and respiratory irritation, hoarseness, cough, respiratory problems and asthma attack, To more acute crises among the population that suffers some type of previous respiratory problem. "
In addition to these short-term effects, it should be noted that the smoke is composed of gases (carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxides, etc.), soot, and particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) that have a negative effect on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems of the population exposed to this type of contamination on a recurrent basis.
For all of this, Ecologistas en Acción, requests in its writing that Autonomous Community and Ayuntamiento de Mazarrón develop preventive and precautionary measures to avoid situations of this type in the future, and also demand the implementation of alternative techniques to burning (such as grinding And composting) for the proper management of agricultural residues, with the aim of protecting the health of the population of the region, as well as the environment.
