The integral recycling plan of Ecovidrio, the non-profit entity responsible for the management of the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain, and the City of Mazarrón managed to recycle 354 tons of glass during the summer, 9% more than in the same period of the previous year.
For this reason Mazarrón has received the award 'Green Igloo' for having exceeded the figure of recycling of glass compared to the previous year.
The award is a recognition of the commitment of citizens and catering professionals with glass recycling and sustainability.
The award was given that Friday by Ecovidrio officials to the councilors of Environment and Services, Francisco G. Asensio and Domingo Hernández.
Ecovidrio has increased the scope and dimension of the comprehensive glass recycling plan in the summer period, an initiative that aims to raise awareness in the hospitality industry and increase the data on glass recycling during the summer months.
In this edition, a total of 81 catering establishments in Mazarrón have collaborated with the entity, an important fact given the influence of the hospitality sector, which generates 50% of waste from single-use glass containers.
In addition, the summer season is vital for the recycling of glass, a period in which 30% of the total recycled glass is collected during the year.
The results obtained have been achieved thanks to the collaboration of the catering professionals of Mazarrón and the provision of resources by Ecovidrio.
With the aim of facilitating citizen collaboration, 52cubes adapted to the needs of catering professionals have been delivered and the frequency of glass collection has been extended to adequately manage the increase in activity in this sector.
The integral plan has had the participation of 80 coastal municipalities throughout the country and more than 6,300 catering establishments.
The campaign has managed to recycle in total more than 27,900 tons of glass containers, which have avoided CO2 emissions equivalent to removing 4,500 cars from circulation.
Sustainable hospitality
The most committed catering establishments have been the winners of a master class with Ángel León, at his restaurant Aponiente awarded with two Michelin stars.

Ángel León, known as 'Chef del Mar' and promoter of sustainability in haute cuisine with initiatives such as the recycling of discarded fish, has been the ambassador of the campaign 'Take note, recycle glass' The chef has created a sustainable sea ice cream and he has called on citizens and hotel professionals to encourage them to recycle glass at this time.
Glass recycling data in Mazarrón
According to the latest data for 2016, the citizens of Mazarrón recycled a total of 843,180 kilograms of glass, which means that each inhabitant recycled an average of 27.5 kg.
Regarding the rate of containerization, Mazarrón is located with an average of 148 inhabitants per container, currently having a total of 207 igloos for glass packaging waste installed.
