The pendant of Phoenician gold found last September by the students of the course of underwater archeology of the University of Murcia is protagonist these days in the Archaeological Museum of the capital of the Region.
The piece, found next to the beach of La Isla, was dated to the 6th century BC.
This finding is "the piece of the month" in the aforementioned museum.
The municipal archaeologist, María Martínez, and the course directors, José Lajara and Juan Pinedo, offered a conference last week at the museum located on Avenida Alfonso X in Murcia, to detail the importance of the discovery.
The piece will be exhibited for 30 days to return later to the Museum of Mazarron Roman Factory of Salazones where it will be permanently exhibited along with other archaeological remains found in the underwater courses carried out by the UMU.
This finding, made on the island of Adentro in the vicinity of the beach of the island, makes the students think that Mazarrón was not only a place of passage for merchants who came attracted by the mineral wealth, but also we could be before the presence of a port complex this point of the Mediterranean.
"It is a qualitative leap because the usual pieces such as amphoras, plates and vessels, which speak of maritime trade, now adds this finding that shows that we would be before a settlement with the residence of aristocrats of the time," Pinedo said. , who indicated that the piece found was typical of the trousseau of wealthy people.
During last September, 14 students from the United States, France, Germany, Brazil and from different parts of the national geography gathered in Mazarrón to attend a course that affects the nomenclature "Mazarron Fenicio" as a world reference for the scholars of this civilization, following the findings of the Phoenician ships in the vicinity of the beach of the Island.
The courses of underwater archeology that are being carried out in Mazarrón are possible thanks to the collaboration of the Department of Historical Heritage of the City of Mazarrón, the Center for Near East Studies and Late Antiquity of the University of Murcia (CEPOAT), of the Federation of Underwater Activities of the Region of Murcia, Cajamurica Foundation, the Calypso Diving Club, the Hispania diving center, ArqueoMar, Nido Robotics, Casco Antiguo and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, as well as the IMAS and regatta clubs of Mazarrón and the Puerto Deportivo.
