The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Francisco Jódar, today supervised the end of the musealization project of the Fish Market of Mazarrón, which has a budget of 59,000 euros financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and by the Counseling, through the Local Fishing Action Group of Galpemur.
The project includes aesthetic improvements, as well as the placement of photographs and another series of exhibition elements with the aim of conducting guided tours of the fish market and publicizing the activity of this coastal municipality closely linked to fishing traditions.
The Minister highlighted "the great potential to diversify the activities of the Fishermen's Association of Mazarrón towards the commercialization of fishery products and tourism, which can be facilitated with the Local Action Group".
He also stressed that "the fishing sector stabilizes the local economy and fixes the population, while favoring the placing on the market of products with low impact on carbon footprint and of an unbeatable quality".
This Brotherhood develops its activity in the modalities of smaller arts, drag, fence and surface longline.
In 2016 it had a fishing production that reached 2,396,306 kilos, with an economic value in first sale of 4,435,000 euros.
Currently it is the first brotherhood in income, although these have oscillations motivated by the greater presence or absence of pelagic species (sardine, anchovy, jack mackerel, starling, among others), which are the target of their predominant fleet, the purse seine.
Traditionally this fleet operates outside the Region most of the year, as pelagic species move along the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast, looking for outcrops of cold water and nutrients.
Other help
The Ministry also contributed last year with a grant of 59,000 euros, through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, aimed at updating the electronic auction system of the Lonja de Mazarron, equipment, software and facilities, among other elements, that facilitate the commercial development and contribute to the fulfillment of the fishing data supply obligations of captures and sales.
It also highlights another aid of 42,800 euros from the aforementioned fund for the video surveillance system, and the modernization of the decalcified water supply system for the ice factory, investments that improve citizen security in this port area, and improve water quality with the one that makes the food ice.
