Naturalists Association of Southeast denounces the fragmentation of a large wind project in the Sierra del Algarrobo to circumvent the Environmental Impact Assessment.
The Association notes that this is a huge mountain of environmental and landscape values as their protection has asked on several occasions.
The Southeastern Association of Naturalists has recently responded and in the process of institutional consultation three cases of Environmental Impact Assessment of Wind Farms in the Sierra del Algarrobo (Mazarrón, Cartagena and Fuente Alamo) to be installed mainly on land owned by the municipality of Mazarrón .
The three cases are being handled by the DG of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control are promoted by the same company Montes Aquilanos SLU and environmental documentation has been prepared by the same consultant SLU Ecoterra sustainable development.
Moreover, it is very instructive that the numbers of the three cases are correlated (35/10 AAU, 36/10 and 37/10 AAU AAU).
For the partnership is clear that this is the fragmentation of a single project which adds 57 wind turbines in order to avoid environmental impact assessment under Law 4 / 2009 (set to 25 wind turbines that the number from which it is applied EIA).
For this reason, the Association has asked to be subjected to Environmental Impact Assessment and Impact Assessment on the Natura 2000 network considering the cumulative and synergistic effects of all the wind turbine.
In that letter, ANSE recalled that the Sierra del Algarrobo, located in the East Regional Park, SPAs and SCIs "Sierra de la Muela, Cape Tiñoso and Head of Roland", has significant environmental values such as excellent raptor populations (peregrine falcon, golden eagle, owls).
In addition, this saw is part of the home range of some of Bonelli's eagle pairs nesting in the nearby SPA.
On the other hand, the Sierra del Algarrobo has important habitats of Community interest and is the most extensive area of municipal forests of the coast of Murcia.
For the foregoing reasons, the vocation of the Sierra del Algarrobo is nothing to be protected area.
Thus, the Association requested with SEO / BirdLife inclusion in the SPA "Sierra de La Muela and Cape Tiñoso" for the designation of Special Protection Areas for birds in 2001.
On the other hand, a report by WWF in 2004 ANSE and recommended the proposal as a Site of Community Importance of the southern slopes of this mountain to contain the interesting formations of Periploca angustifolia (5220 * Scrub Ziziphus lotus tree).
The development of energy facilities involve significant negative impacts on populations of birds of prey (due to collision with wind turbines and power lines) in the Community interest habitats and forests (opening track, increased fire risk) and the landscape provided from wide areas of the coast of Mazarrón and from the Campo de Cartagena-Fuente Alamo.
ANSE recalls that strongly endorses the development of renewable energy but that its implementation should be carried out as planned (in the region he has not received a plan for the implementation of renewable energy with a corresponding Strategic Environmental Assessment.)
In addition, projects developed after planning must respect the law of Environmental Impact Assessment and its effects on the Natura 2000 network.
