The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), through Murcia Oceanographic Centre, currently developing a new ground tank project for the reproduction of bluefin tuna.
This infrastructure will be installed on land owned by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura and will be located in the vicinity of the Experimental Plant of Marine Cultures The Institute already has in Mazarrón, specifically in the Rambla del Valdelentisco.
This new facility will complement the existing larval rearing in Murcia Oceanographic Centre and will, for the first time in Europe, players hold the tuna in tanks on land, infrastructure that is made by the IEO with a budget of six million euros.
For selecting this project was signed in 2009 a cooperation agreement between the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, the Ministry of Science and Innovation and Ministry of Universities, Business and Research in the Region of Murcia.
The interest of the project is given by the bluefin tuna being one of the most popular fish species in the market, especially in countries like Japan, where it is greatly appreciated.
Research such as that undertaken by the Oceanographic Centre of Murcia are pioneers in Europe to locate the region in the lead in exports of this product with economic and employment benefits that entails.
This measure serves to regulate catches of this species is in danger of extinction.
