Mazarrón Bay hosts a milestone in aquaculture (20/07/2011)

You never can know for sure what role have the waters of the Bay of Mazarrón in the draft larval rearing of bluefin tuna in captivity being developed by the Oceanographic Centre of Murcia.

This Center has managed to breed in captivity around 20,000 bluefin tuna larvae naturally and from 30 adult specimens.

The larvae, which have already passed the 20 days of life, reach three grams and will be thrown into the sea in the coming days.

The research, part of an agreement signed last year by the Government of the Region of Murcia, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Cajamurcia and financial institutions, Caja Mediterráneo, Cajamar and La Caixa, in collaboration with the Group also Ricardo Fuentes, has allowed the establishment of a Chair of Business in the UPCT coordinated by Professor of Kinki University in Japan, Manabu seok, who led the only team in the world that has viable larvae of the oriental species of tuna captivity.

Investigations have been conducted in the facilities of the Experimental Plant of Marine Cultures Murcia Oceanographic Centre, part of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, located in Mazarron.

The owner of Agriculture and Water said that the exploitation of bluefin tuna "has traditionally been linked to the shores of the Mediterranean", but stressed that capture fisheries and catches for aquaculture "has led in recent years, the overexploitation of the resource" .

The status of bluefin tuna fishing has led to a restriction of the catches and increased regulation with annual rates of Mediterranean fisheries, which have gone from 32,000 tonnes in 1999 to 13,500 tonnes in 2010.

Cerda said that these works seek to recover the economic activity generated by this species in the regional aquaculture sector, and enable the sustainable exploitation of bluefin tuna to recover the stock has declined in recent years.
