Councillor for Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, Magdalena Mendez, recently visited the Experimental Station of Tropical Crops Cajamar, located on the estate of The Palmerillas in Almeria, in order to learn first hand how to develop the cultivation of various subtropical species such as avocado, mango and custard apple.
Mendez has made this visit to see first hand the process followed at the time of planting and harvesting crops such as, it so happens, that these species can grow and develop in a climate very similar to what exists in the coastal area of Mazarron.
For Magdalena Mendez "like Mazarrón motivate other crops that now has very good start in the market."
These crops also have great potential.
For example, the avocado requires water quality below 1,500 dS / m (low salinity) and quantity similar to that of citrus, a crop that is already produced in Mazarrón.
In addition, the life of this tree is about 30 years.
The handle, although less cold tolerant avocado does not require high quality water, making it ideal in mild climates and lower quality water.
The cherimoya is beautifully detailed but a bit more, like the previous crops, the factors that help are very favorable development in areas of the municipality as Ifre.
Mendez and several coaches also visited the plantations of loquat, grape and persimmon, where they learned about new varieties of these species.
The idea is "to promote these crops as a complement to those existing in the municipality."
Councillor for Agriculture also stressed that farmers who want to implement complementary crops of this type "will have expertise on the part of the foundation Cajamar and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water of the Autonomous Community, and the support that we can offer discounted from the City. "
The mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, stressed that "agriculture has always been one of the main economic engines of Mazarrón and we support and encourage it to address the current crisis."
The Mayor stressed that "it is time to reinvent themselves and that agriculture to take its rightful place as a source of employment and economic wealth."
