The shrine of the Virgen del Carmen in the chapel of the hamlet of Lewis looks completely renovated thanks to the restoration efforts that have been carried out by the airbrush painter Juan Antonio Belmar Mazarron Santiago.
The idea of ​​this restoration came from the village headman of Lewis, John A.
Soler, who proposed the neighbors carry out repair and improvement of the chapel using funds available to the Virgin.
At first, the restoration work were to focus on the recovery of the heads of 8 angels accompanying the image of Mary in the dressing room and, after the Civil War, were completely destroyed.
Angels are of clay and have been handcrafted in the workshop "Crafts Serrano" of Murcia.
After this recovery, the artist also painted a beautiful picture of the Virgin of Carmen that has been used to cover a window blind that disfigured the dressing room.
Finally installed a halogen light directed towards the interior of the chamber, and enhances the whole interior paints.
Mazarron Town Council also wanted to participate in the conservation and recovery of this heritage and to make it more comfortable to visit the chapel of the hermitage, the council has installed a metal railing between the small, steep stairs and hollow basement, avoiding the risk of falls for older people wishing to visit this space to see how they have been the work.
Also, the village headman of Leiva has carried out the necessary arrangements with Iberdrola for the company supplied electricity to remove the pole was attached to the property and, sometimes moved by the wind, caused damage to the wall.
