The IEO stresses the role of jellyfish in the disposal of the waste product of human activity (20/07/2012)

Franco warns of the proliferation of jellyfish in the Mediterranean |

The expert Ignacio J.

Franco, researcher at the Oceanography Centre of Murcia under the Spanish Oceanographic Institute (IEO), yesterday gave an interesting presentation on jellyfish in which, besides making a perfect exposition of these curious beings, reviewed the different types of jellyfish that can inhabit the Spanish Mediterranean coast and Murcia and Mazarron.

Through this conference, which took place in hotel "Summit" in Puerto de Mazarron, the researcher gave a clear and simple advice about first aid in case of a bite from one of the few species of jellyfish that cause bites to humans.

The expert from IEO Murcia stated that the massive proliferation of jellyfish in our coastline is only a consequence of massive dumping of sewage into the sea and the drag of fertilizers used in agriculture, which are the ideal food for marine animals such the which also have an impressive reproductive capacity can reach them generating more than 20 million larvae per individual.

"What would our seas if there is no such scyphozoans?".

Ignacio Franco's answer is clear: "our seas would be a sewer."

The researcher also discussed the network of the IEO sightings of Murcia has established and which allows to know well in advance the presence of jellyfish on our beaches.

According to data collected this summer is expected proliferation of a type of jellyfish is not very common on our shores as the Pelagia noctiluca, a species of jellyfish that can become large and whose bite health care needs.

Ignacio Franco also addressed the sensitive issue of the lack of research funding by the government.

Funds that both central government and the regional eliminated entirely, leaving in air research from the Oceanographic Center is carried on for years and could lead to early detection phases of proliferation of jellyfish and location major colonies in the Spanish Mediterranean, in order to be able to make an effective preventive work just as jellyfish are still embryonic.

In relation to this matter Councilman Environment of the City of Mazarron, David Fernandez, offered the cooperation of the session and the willingness to participate in joint projects and dissemination of work done in the IEO of Murcia.

They were also partners with the mayor Oceanographic Center of Public Safety and Civil Protection, Miguel Maria Garcia, and the head of Civil Protection in Mazarron, Pedro Hernandez.

All of them were present at the conversation for a little better the future expectations regarding these animals.

The lecture was organized by the center "Diving Hispania", ended with a lively discussion in which participants shared their different experiences, some painful and others happy, in their encounters with the unknown and demonized marine species that seems to only visit us in the summer to spite our vacation, but that far from this belief, inhabit the sea almost all year and played a key role as natural filtering of microorganisms and bacteria that pollute our oceans and beaches.
