On the occasion of the celebration of 'World Wetlands Day', which is celebrated on February 2, the team of 'LIFE + White-headed duck in the Murcia Region' project carried out an activity in the lakes of the mulberry trees to give known to the White-headed Duck and its wetlands.
The seminar, organized by the Directorate General Environment of the CARM in collaboration with the Department of Environment of the City of Mazarrón, was a success as guests enjoyed the wetland Mazarron a total of 22 specimens of White-headed Duck, located in the old gravel pit.
The activity began with a talk given by María José Norte, the association 'Alcedo', explaining to the audience the concept of wetland species that inhabit and ecosystem benefits associated with these spaces, with the attention and participation of both older as younger.
Then held a presentation on the 'LIFE + of White-headed Duck in the Region of Murcia' project, which developed the main objectives of this project consisting of increased physical habitat, the compatibility of wetlands to agricultural activity and environmental and maintenance of the habitat of the species in our region in the long term.
The day continued with the construction of two artificial islands built from contributions of land, and plant adaptation, coatings composed of heather, to prevent the waves steal the land, seeding and placement of rhizomes of reed, so that after growth, better protect birds.
This activity was especially emotional for the enthusiasm and participation of children, who worked intensively on the contribution of land, placement of seeds and rhizomes.
Once built floating islands, members of the Dive Center Southeast 'Bachisub', who voluntarily participated in the activity, carried out the floating islands in the lake built with the LIFE + project of 19,000 m².
This activity was very educational for children, who could see this working in direct biodiversity conservation developed by specialists in diving.
The association 'Friends of Nature' also participated in the day in which the Councillor for the Environment, David Fernandez was present.
The celebration of 'World Wetlands Day' was accompanied by informative panels headed Duck on the LIFE + project and also about the new development opportunities offered by biodiversity.
Once the day is finished, these panels were taken to tourist information point in the municipality of Mazarrón, which will be available in the near future for all visitors of this town.
