María Antonia Martínez Gutiérrez Cortines and reflect on the role of women in public life (11/03/2015)

Interesting roundtable Cycle Women's Leadership which welcomed Tuesday the Cultural Center Mazarrón.

María Antonia Martínez, first regional president of Democracy and Cristina Gutiérrez Cortines, MEP since 1999, staged a talk in which the current role of women in public life was analyzed.

The event, moderated by journalist Lola Grace, attended by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Francisco Garcia and the Councillor for Culture, Ginés Campillo.

The first to speak was the representative was Cristina Gutiérrez Cortines.

The popular MEP wanted to focus on some symptoms of backlash that reflects today's society, despite the gains achieved.

"In some Arab countries now see more veils than ten years ago and the West danto disturbing data are juvenile abuse".

For its part, the Socialist and first regional president in Spain, María Antonia Martínez, acknowledged that "there has been a progressive advance in what is women's representation in politics", however, also said that the fact that more representation does not mean there is real equality.

"Real equality is real power and that much remains to be achieved. We still do not see women in the judiciary, or rectories of universities ..."

The roundtable was attended by two local policies, councilors in previous legislatures: Ginesa Méndez and Carmen Navarro.

The first one, which was one of the first mayors of the Spanish democratic history, wanted to remember that "before when the lists were made to the trophy wife sought", despising therefore the capacities of women.

Moreover Carmen Navarro, current president of Mazarrón Red Cross, wanted to emphasize the fact that when a woman enters the world of politics requires much more than men.

Also highlighted the disturbing data Navarro isolation we currently among teenagers, motivated by the economic crisis.

The Mayor of Mazarrón, Francisco Garcia, listened with interest the activities of each of the speakers and expressed his agreement with María Antonia Martínez in the fact that female representation does not match the real power.

García called for further work to reach new conquiestas.

For his part, Councillor for Culture, Ginés Campillo, was pleased by the quality of the talk he organizes his Department and stressed the "four good examples" who gathered Tuesday at the Cultural Center of Mazarrón.
