New archaeological findings extend the surface of the Roman fish salting factory (20/08/2015)

A team of archaeologists working these days in the neighboring plot with Salt Roman Factory Museum of Puerto de Mazarrón.

The new archaeological findings will involve an extension of the existing museum confirmed as the Mayor of Mazarrón, Alicia Jimenez.

"After meetings with the owners of the site and follow established legal procedures take forward a project that will house not only the continuation of the museum but also allow you to have a multipurpose room hosting cultural events," said Alicia Jimenez.

Free visits since August

The Roman fish salting factory is declared of Cultural Interest (BIC).

It belongs to the IV and V centuries AD and is a reflection of business activity in Roman times linked to the production of sauces and salted fish that were consumed in the various territories of the Empire.

El Puerto de Mazarrón during late antiquity was an important economic center of Murcia coast linked to fishing.

Along with its port facilities were located are occupying a large area on the right bank of the bay.

The current museum preserves part of the structures of this important complex of Roman times.

The characteristic elements common to all the factories were pools or salting tanks, where the fish are macerated with salt and where different products were made suchas called garum, the most famous fish sauce and reaching high prices in the Roman market.

In the museum, besides exposure of the remains it is also offered a glimpse of the rich archaeological heritage of Mazarrón and Puerto de Mazarrón.

The Roman fish salting factory is located at La Torre, number 3 of Puerto de Mazarrón.

It can be visited from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 hours.
